Design Technology

The subject of Design & Technology provides students with the opportunity to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

The emphasis is to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high quality prototypes and products, for a wide range of uses.

The department consists of five teaching staff. Students rotate around the specialist  teachers and rooms. We have well-equipped specialist rooms, two laser cutters, embroidery machines and fabric printing facilities. Design and Technology is taught in mixed ability groups. Pupils have 4 lessons per fortnight in years 7 and 8.

Students in years 7 and 8 undertake design and make tasks in a variety of material areas – food, textiles, resistant materials and electronics. The outcome of the design and make activity can change; recent projects have included: electronic novelty, keepsake box, kites, garment making, bread products, CAD/CAM keyrings and clocks.

Homework -This will be set weekly and the tasks will range from written pieces, purchasing ingredients for practical food lessons, research tasks, learning tasks and finishing off pieces.

Assessment - All of the work completed in each area in D&T is evidence towards her overall achievement for each project. Research, designing, making and evaluation all contribute towards the evidence, although different projects will focus on one or more of these.
