She was a Polish scientist who lived in France but was always proud of her Polish identity. Her achievements included a theory of radioactivity (a term that she coined), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two elements, polonium and radium She won 2 Nobel Prizes, in physics and chemistry, and developed the first portable x-ray machine to help soldiers wounded in the 1st World War.
